How does a neck lift procedure work?

The procedure typically involves the following steps:

• Anesthesia

Dr. Barnes performs all of his procedures safely & comfortably under awake local anesthesia, with oral sedation, and with the added comfort of ProNox (laughing gas) available. Twilight or general anesthesia can be arranged in our accredited surgery center for an additional cost.

Dr. Barnes makes discreet incisions around your ears and possibly under your chin. These incisions allow access to the underlying structures.

Necklift Cosmetic Surgery Facts

Procedure:

Improves loose neck skin and/or excess heaviness by removing fat (liposculpture), tightening the muscles and re-draping the skin. If required, a Platysmaplasty procedure is necessary to improve the vertical hanging lines in the front of the neck. Often done in combination with face lift procedure.

Length:

1.5 – 2.5 hours

Anesthesia:

Typically local anesthesia with sedation

Outpatient:

Usually outpatient. 

Side Effects:

Numbness, discomfort, bruising, swelling, drainage or fluid under skin, tightness moving head and neck

Risks:

Infection, bleeding, poor wound healing, excessive scarring

Recovery:

Typically 5 to 7 days. Wearing a compression wrap for 2 weeks. Suture removal in 10-12 days, sometimes longer. More strenuous activity requires 4 weeks or more. Bruising: 1 to 2 weeks.

Results:

Usually 5 to 10 years.

If necessary, Dr. Barnes tightens the platysma muscles (responsible for the appearance of neck bands) to create a smoother neck contour.
